THURSDAY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Rite: (adapted for PCF Crypt)

1. Entrance Procession.

– th and bo goes first, cr & cb follow, and the other ministers. Finally C.

– Arriving at the sanctuary, Cc and C kiss the altar. th hands the thurible to C who incenses the altar and the crucifix. After, C gives th the thurible and goes to his place. C begins with the introductory rites.

2. “Gloria”

– While it is being sung, ms rings the bells, and when it is finished, the bells are kept until the singing of the “Gloria” of the Easter Vigil.

5. The Washing of the Feet.

– The men and women who represent the Christian community are led to seats prepared in a suitable place in the sanctuary.

– Meanwhile, C removes his chasuble (which is draped over the chair) and puts on a gremial brought by a server from the credence table.

– ms bring in the basin, a large ewer of water and towel from the credence table. C bows to the altar and, accompanied by the  servers, goes to the first of those whose feet are to be washed. C pours water over each of their feet and then dries them. Appropriate chants may be sung to accompany this rite.

– After the washing of feet, the representatives go back to their places. C bows to the altar and goes to his chair where the gremial is taken off and a server takes it back to the credence table. ms brings a ewer of water, basin and towel from the credence table and C washes and dries his hands, and he puts the chasuble back on.

– C leads the Universal Prayer (Prayers of the faithful).

– the Creed is not said.

6. Liturgy of the Eucharist

– cb accompany the offertory procession towards the altar. Aside from the bread and wine, other gifts are offered. “Ubi Caritas” or a similar hymn may be sung.

– Sufficient amount of bread should be consecrated for Holy Communion on this and the following day.

– Preface: Proper

– Eucharistic Prayer I (Roman Canon): *communicantes, hanc igitur, qui pridie propria

– the bell is not rung during the elevations, although wooden clappers may replace where it is customary.

7. Communion Rite

– ms places the purifier bowl on the altar (“Agnus Dei”)

– After the distribution of Communion, vessels are purified and remaining consecrated hosts are gathered on a large ciborium placed at the center of a corporal on the altar table and is left veiled. (If necessary, other ciboria containing consecrated Hosts can be taken immediately to the “other place of reservation in the sacristy or elsewhere. It seems preferable that only one ciborium be carried in procession to the altar of repose.) The Missal and its stand are removed from the altar so that only the corporal and ciborium remain on the altar.

– C, standing at the chair, says the Prayer after Communion. The blessing and dismissal are omitted.

8. The Transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament

– C removes his chasuble (which is draped over the chair) and puts on a cope brought by a server from the credence table.

– Because they will lead the procession, cb go to the very front of the sanctuary and wait there, facing the altar.

– C approach the altar. th and bo approach C who prepares and blesses the incense as usual. C kneels down and incenses the Blessed Sacrament with three double swings.

– ms takes the white humeral veil from the credence table to C and C puts on the humeral veil. C rises, takes the ciborium, and covers it with the ends of the veil.

– candles and lights in the altar of repose are lit by altar servers.

– a Eucharistic hymn (Pange lingua or O Salutaris) is sung.

– Those not taking part in the procession remain kneeling while the Eucharist is transferred.

the procession follows in this sequence:

I. Candle bearers

II. Thurifer and incense boat bearer

III. Priest (C) carrying the ciborium containing the Blessed Sacrament

– upon reaching the place of repose, C places the ciborium at the center of a corporal in front of the tabernacle of reposition or places it in the tabernacle leaving the door open. Except for cb, th and bo, all kneel.

– C removes the humeral veil and hands it to one of the servers. th and bo approach C, who prepares and blesses the incense. Kneeling, C incenses the Blessed Sacrament, while Tantum ergo Sacramentum  or another eucharistic hymn is sung.

– C then places the ciborium inside the tabernacle of reposition or closes the door of the tabernacle and locks it.

– after a period of silent adoration, C together with all the other ministers genuflect and return to the sacristy.

10. Stripping of the Altar

– servers silently and slowly strip the altar, removing the candles, flowers, altar linens, leaving the altar bare.

Things to prepare:

  • Roman Missal/ Order of Holy Week (Proper-Thursday of the Lord’s Supper, Proper Pf, Roman Canon), copies of  the Eucharistic Prayer for Cc
  • On the ambo: Lectionary & copy of the prayers of the faithful for C and the reader
  • on the credence table: bell, Prepared Chalice, 1 large paten with enough big hosts for concelebrants, 1 Ciborium veil, ewer and basin, finger towel, purifier bowl, book stand, Cope, Humeral veil; for the washing of feet: gremial, ewer and basin, (soap if to be used), and towel for drying the feet,      
  • altar of repose, key for the tabernacle, vigil candles, flowers, kneeler
  • in the sanctuary: chairs for the ministers and concelebrants
  • chairs and place for the representatives for the washing of feet
  • in the nave: table, white table cover, 1 ciborium with sufficient bread for holy communion this and the following day, cruets & other offerings if there are
  • in the sacristy: White vestments and stoles, Thurible, Incense Boat, Candles, processional cross, extra charcoal for the thurible, lighter

– Tomorrow, Good Friday is a day of penance, i.e. fasting and abstinence.

Reminders:

– Old oils are burned today. They may be put into the vigil lamp before the reserved Blessed Sacrament. Newly blessed holy oils are brought after the Chrism Mass.

– Before the Mass begins, the tabernacle should be entirely empty and a sufficient amount of bread should be consecrated in this Mass for the Communion on this and the following day.

– It is not allowed to expose the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance or even in a ciborium. Precisely, the Blessed Sacrament is reposed in a tabernacle at the “altar of repose”. It is not allowed to repose the Blessed Sacrament outside the Church.

– The faithful should be encouraged to adore the Blessed Sacrament during the night. The reading of the Gospel of John cc. 13-17 is recommended for the prolonged adoration.
