Garbage Segregation

Roma Capitale has new policies for garbage segregation “raccolta differenziata”, effective August 5, 2019. Fines could reach up to €732.00 for each offense. These policies apply not only to the Kitchen, Refectory and other common areas, but also to personal waste disposal.

Here’s a summary in English, and possible moves for PCF (suggestions are most welcome).

  1. FOOD AND ORGANIC WASTE, AND TISSUE PAPER: main bag must be transparent or semi-transparent, and biodegradable
    * plastic or paper shopping bags are almost all biodegradable; but they must be placed in transparent main bags that are also biodegradable

  2. PLASTIC AND METAL: use transparent or semi-transparent bags (these bags need not be biodegradable)
    * whenever possible, crush, compress or pack cans and plastic bottles well to lessen volume
    * used disposable plastic cups and plates by the coffee machine or after parties could be stacked together to lessen volume

  3. DRY PAPER AND CARDBOARD: pack them into paper or cardboard sacks or boxes, never in plastic bags
    * kindly fold and pack them well together to minimize volumes; for example, smaller boxes could be folded and inserted into the slightly bigger ones
    * for clean and reusable bond paper that can be used as scratch paper, please put them in the box inside the cabinet on the first floor landing, opposites sleeping St. Joseph; feel free to get them too as needed
    * NOTE FOR BIG BOXES: they may not be placed in the garbage bins; please pack them in designated areas together with other big boxes, so they could be brought to the market for disposal

  4. GLASS: do not put in bags
    * we may temporarily collect them in containers for transport, but then they must be inserted one by one directly into the designated green garbage bins by the roadside

  5. NON-RECYCLABLE WASTE: use transparent plastic bags

In short, for plastic bags, they must be TRANSPARENT or SEMI-TRANSPARENT, either:

  1. BIODEGRADABLE:
    * for food and organic waste
    * for tissue papers

  2. NON-BIODEGRADABLE:
    * for plastics and metals together
    * or for non-recyclable waste (do not mix with plastic and metals)

Other items MAY NOT be placed in plastic bags; rather:

  1. USE CARDBOARD BOXES:
    * for dry paper and cardboard

  2. INSERT DIRECTLY INTO THE DESIGNATED BINS:
    * glass bottles
    * but not window panes, which have to be disposed of in special containers

For the First to Third floor areas, we have the garbage bins outside the Choir Loft. Please compact your waste as much as you can, to facilitate disposal.

For the Kitchen and Refectory areas, corresponding bins will are also provided.

SPECIAL TYPES OF WASTE CANNOT BE INCLUDED IN THE ABOVE. THEY HAVE TO BE DISPOSED OF SEPARATELY IN SPECIAL LOCATIONS, AS INSTRUCTED IN THIS WEBSITE:

  • batteries (in some stores, schools, etc.)
  • medicines (in pharmacies and ASL)
  • clothing, bags, shoes, curtains, etc. (yellow containers along sidewalks)
  • printing consumables – toner, ink cartridges, etc. (in designated places)
  • oil (in designated places)
  • car lead batteries (in designated places, or exchange when buying new batteries)
  • asbestos – has to be removed or disposed of by specialists
